The Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art in Strasbourg opened in 1998 on the banks of the Ill in the heart of historic Strasbourg, becoming a beacon of cultural life within the city. Designed by architect Adrien Fainsilber, its design is based on the concepts of clarity and openness, and provides convenient access to the various departments of the museum's exhibition spaces, permanent collections, graphic arts and photography, educational services, a library, an auditorium, as well as a restaurant and bookshop. The collection, enriched thanks to several donations from institutions and individuals, cover the period from 1870 to the present day, and geographically speaking is mainly focused on Western Europe.The layout highlights the important art movements of the 20th century and also bears witness to the diversity and vitality of contemporary creation.The collection illustrates the highlights of Impressionism, Art Nouveau, Primitivism, Abstraction, Surrealism, New Realism, support(s)/surface(s), fluxus, and arte povera.Some of the artists whose work is well represented here include Gustave Doré, Jean Arp, Max Ernst, Victor Brauner, Frantisek Kupka, Vassily Kandinsky, Robert Filliou, Daniel Buren, Sarkis, and Bertrand Lavier.Numerous exhibitions and events (screenings, concerts, conferences, performances) make this a vibrant, and resolutely open arts centre.
